16-5A volleyball: First-place Whitehouse sweeps John Tyler

Whitehouse remained unbeaten in District 16-5A volleyball action with a sweep of John Tyler (26-24, 25-19, 25-15) on Tuesday night at John Tyler High School’s Lions Den.

John Tyler, which was looking to move into a tie for the top spot in the district, jumped out to a 13-8 lead.


Instead of calling a timeout, Whitehouse head coach Britney Nordin let her team play through it, and the Ladycats responded with an 8-1 run to take the lead.

With the score tied at 22-22, John Tyler’s serve went into the net, and Kate Idrogo followed with a kill to give Whitehouse a 24-20 lead.

Makia Moon delivered a kill on an assist by Michiah McFarland, and Whitehouse hit the ball out to tie the score at 24. The Ladycats responded with two straight points to win the opening set.

“This group has great chemistry, and they do a great job of playing with poise through the tough times,” Nordin said. “Volleyball is a tricky game. We were doing what we needed to be doing, and they are so confident in each other that it helps me be confident in them.”

Whitehouse jumped out to a 12-5 lead in the second set. John Tyler slowly chipped away at the lead and used an 8-2 spurt to cut the score to 19-17.

With the score at 23-19, Whitehouse got kills from Briana Brown and Aja Williams on assists from Ryan Foster to close the set.

Whitehouse led from start the finish in the final set and completed the sweep with a kill by Ashlee Taylor on an assist by Foster.

“This was an exciting game, because we did some new things we had been working on,” Nordin said. “John Tyler is a good team, so I was excited we played the way we did.”

Brown led Whitehouse with 16 kills. Idrogo had nine kills. Taylor had seven kills, and Williams added six kills. Foster finished with 33 assists.

Moon led John Tyler with 10 kills. Symone Morris had nine kills and six blocks. McFarland had 26 assists.

Whitehouse (26-8, 6-0) will host Lufkin on Friday. John Tyler (25-11, 4-2) will play at Marshall on Friday.W

Whitehouse won the JV match 25-16, 25-19. The LadyCat freshmen won 25-8, 25-20 over JT Blue and 25-17, 25-17 over JT White.
