Former Henderson County deputy dead in head-on crash

ATHENS (KYTX) – A two-vehicle collision has claimed the life of a former Henderson County Sheriff’s Office Deputy.

37-year-old Kevin Hanes of Athens, died after being transported to ETMC Tyler, according to DPS Trooper Jean Dark.

Trooper Dark said a preliminary report indicates Hanes was traveling east on Loop 7 and crossed the center line striking a car driven by 77-year-old BoBrow Gunnels, of Kemp.He is listed in serious condition at ETMC.

Hanes worked for the Henderson County Sheriff’s Office for several years, and at one time held the rank of Major for the department.

The wreck is still under investigation.
