ATHENS — The Tatum Eagles took advantage of several costly turnovers and penalties, rallying for a 41-8 Class 2A Division I area win over Godley at Bruce Field.

Tatum (9-2) will advance to take on Franklin next week in the Region III quarterfinals.

Godley (9-3) got on the board first when Jay Mathis tossed a 46-yard touchdown pass to Kyle Samples to cap a nine-play, 67-yard first-quarter drive, but Godley spent the rest of the game shooting itself in the foot with turnover and penalties.

The first turnover, an interception by Tatum’s C.J. Whitaker, led to Tatum’s first touchdown in the second quarter. After Whitaker’s pick, the Eagles drove 77 yards in eight plays and got on the board with a 55-yard pass from Darian Brooks to Deyonta Roberson.

After a fumble recovery on Godley’s next possession, Brooks threw a 22-yard touchdown pass to Andrew Stoker to make it a 14-8 contest at halftime.
