Elkhart rallies to defeat Palestine Westwood in overtime

ELKHART – John Ashford rushed for 204 yards and scored three touchdowns to help lead Elkhart back from a 28-14 halftime deficit and defeat Palestine Westwood 35-34 in overtime Friday in their District 9-3A Division I opener at Jery Ives Memorial Stadium.

Ashford finished with 30 carries in the contest, highlighted by a 54-yard touchdown run. Also finding the end zone on the ground for Elkhart (3-1, 1-0) were Johnathan Simmons (3-78) and quarterback Landry Mays (13-86). All told, the Elks rushed for 388 yards in their victory.



On defense, Nate Bell led Elkhart with nine solo tackles while the Elks also picked off five passes, two by Ashford and Demarkus Ray, and another by Trent Huff.

Westwood dropped to 1-3 and 0-1.

The Elks will next face West (3-1, 1-0) on Friday, Oct. 6 with Westwood returning home to play Whitney (3-1, 0-1).
