TJC Football: Apaches fall out west to NMMI

New Mexico Military rallied in the fourth quarter to topple Tyler Junior College, 20-14 on Saturday at the Wool Bowl in Roswell, New Mexico.
TJC led 14-7 entering the final period, but the Broncos kicked two field goals and scored a touchdown to ice the game.
The Apaches (2-4) fall to 1-3 in Southwest Junior College Football Conference play, while NMMI improves to 3-2 and 1-2.
The Broncos took a 7-0 on the Apaches’ first play from scrimmage when Corey Quarterman intercepted a pass and returned it 35 yards for a touchdown. Roland Tyson booted the PAT and NMMI was up 7-0 with 11:24 on the clock.
TJC tied the game at 7-7 when former Brownsboro standout Kevon Thompson bulled his way over from the 1-yard line with 11:04 on the clock. Yovannie Garcia made the extra point.
Thompson’s TD was set up on a 17-yard dash by Taequan Tyler and a 16-yard run by Thompson to set up the ball at the one. The touchdown capped a six-play, 61-yard drive.
In the third quarter, the Apaches went on top 14-7 on Trenton Kennedy’s TD that topped off a seven-play 27 yard drive.
Damion Miller, the former John Tyler standout, returned the second half kickoff 45-yards to the NMMI 27 to set up the score.
Johnson’s pass to Greg Howell for 13-yards placed the ball at the 1. On the next play, Kennedy scored. Garcia’s kick was good for a 14-7 TJC lead at 11:04.
That was all the scoring until the fourth quarter when Tyson booted a 45-yard field goal to bring the Broncos with 14-10 with 13:33 on the clock.
After both teams held, the TJC defense held again but the Apaches fumbled on a kick return and NMMI’s Zach Philion recovered at the TJC eight.
On the next play, Fred Jackson scored on an 8-yard run and Tyson made the PAT for a NMMI lead of 17-14 with 8:10 showing.
After consecutive interceptions thrown by Johnson, NMMI drove to the TJC 30 where Tyson made a 47-yard field goal with 1:20 on the scoreboard.
The Apaches had one more chance but gave up the ball on downs at their own 31.
Thompson was the top rusher for TJC with 41 yards and a TD on eight carries. Johnson hit on 12 of 25 passing attempts for 87 yards and three interceptions.
Derrick McClendon, who had an interception, led the Apaches in tackles with 11 with Chris Sanders, who had a pass breakup, adding eight. John Tyler’s Javontavius Mosley and Tyus Walker-Grayson, Maureese Wren and Van’s Justin Bledsoe each had five stops.
TJC recorded five sacks in the game — one each by Sanders and Mosley, and a half sack each by McClendon, Wren, Blaine Hoover, Levi Russo-Bell, Jaylon Cooks and Matt Mitchell. TJC also had 15 tackles for loss that resulted in a minus 55 yards.
In other SWJCFC games, Kilgore 70, Texas A&T 14; Northeastern Oklahoma A&M 35, Navarro 3; and Trinity Valley 36, Cisco 13.
TJC has a bye this week before returning to play on Oct. 12 against NE Oklahoma in Tyler. NMMI visits Cisco at 3 p.m. Saturday.
