The UT Tyler volleyball squad did not disappoint the home crowd on Senior Day at the Herrington Patriot Center on Saturday afternoon. The Patriots dominated Mississippi College with a 3-0 sweep with wins of 25-5, 25-13 and 25-14.
Senior Danika Waldrep, who was also honored before the contest, led the Patriots with nine kills in the game.
The Patriots made things look easy in the first game, jumping out to a 5-1 lead on Breanna Brummett’s serve. UT Tyler pushed its lead to 10-2 and, after losing three points in a row, closed out the set with 15 straight points.
Waldrep served the final 14 points of the set.
UT Tyler continued its run in the beginning of the second set as it began the set up 11-2. Mississippi College found some rhythm offensively later in the set but failed to find a way to slow down the Patriots.
Waldrep closed out the second set with the final two points. Seven of the Patriots’ points in the set came with Waldrep at the service line.
The Patriots struggled at the start of the third set, trailing 5-4, but picked things up by winning seven straight points on the serve of Brummett for 19-9 lead. Fittingly, UT Tyler closed out the set with Waldrep at the service line for a 25-14 win.
Ashten Waldrep led the squad with 15 assists in the game, followed by Madison Kosir, who recorded 13 assists. Emily Wood recorded a game-high 19 digs.
UT Tyler improved to 19-9 on the season, extending the school record for most wins in a season, and 11-5 in American Southwest Conference play. The Patriots face UT Dallas on Tuesday at home for their final game of the year.
The Comets have already clinched their sixth straight East Division title and will host the ASC tournament Nov. 3-5. The Patriots are currently third in the division and have earned a spot in the tournament.
