Patriots split with ETBU

MARSHALL — UT Tyler split a pair of American Southwest Conference basketball games with East Texas Baptist on Tuesday.

In the first game, the Patriot women ended a two-game skid with a 68-61 win over ETBU.



In the second contest, the Tigers held off the Patriots, 84-82, in double overtime.

After three straight road games, the Patriots return home on Saturday to face rival LeTourneau. The women play at 1 p.m., followed by the men at 3 p.m. Both games are slated for the Herrington Patriot Center. The DH will be the first of six straight home dates.

Brittany King registered a double-double, scoring 19 points while grabbing 16 rebounds to lead the Patriots.

The Patriots improve to 10-6 on the season and 5-4 in ASC play, while the Lady Tigers fall to 10-6 and 5-5.

MEN

Free throws by Joe Stephens at the end of regulation and the first extra period tied the game, but East Texas Baptist, led by Jaron Joseph’s 20 points, registered the win.

Darren Houliston had another double-double for UT Tyler, scoring 18 points and grabbing 14 rebounds. Travis Dykman added 19 points, while Stephens (14) and Tyler Hysell (11) were also in double figures for the Patriots.

Kerry McClahan had 16 points for the Tigers, while Clavoisiea Dupree had 12 boards.

Down 66-63 with two seconds left in regulation, Stephens promptly hit three free throws to send the game into overtime.

With 37 seconds left in the first OT, Stephens nailed two free throws to tie the game at 75-75 to force another extra period.

Dupree’s bucket put ETBU up 83-82 with one minute and 30 seconds to go in the game. UT Tyler had a couple of chances, the latter coming with 19 seconds remaining when Junior Mitchell missed two free throw attempts and Houliston rebounded.

The Patriots had an opportunity, but Stephens’ 3-point attempt missed the mark and the Tigers got the ball when possession was awarded to ETBU.

Mitchell added a late free throw for the final of 84-82.

UT Tyler falls to 11-5 and 6-4, while the Tigers improve to 7-9 and 3-7.
