Patriots roll over Southwestern

RICHARDSON — The No. 13 ranked UT Tyler women’s basketball team cruised to a convincing 75-47 win over Southwestern in the opening round of the 2015 NCAA Divison III Women’s Basketball tournament on Saturday at the UTD Recreational Center.

The Patriots (27-2) used a crushing 22-to-6 run in the opening half to put the game away early, as senior Brittany King finished with her 11th double-double of the season.

King had with 17 points and 11 rebounds, leading the Patriots to the easy win.

The Patriots will meet conference rival UT Dallas at 3 p.m. Sunday with a berth in the Sweet 16 at stake.

After a King layup increased the Patriots’ lead to 15-8 with 8:34 left, UT Tyler went on a rampage over the next seven minutes, going up 35-14 with 1:51 left in the half on a Michelle Obach jumper.

Obach and Jasmin Baskin hit a pair of 3-pointers in the closing minute of the first half, giving UT Tyler the commanding 41-18 lead at the break.

It would be much more of the same for the Pirates (15-13) in the second half.

Four Patriots scored in double-digits in the game, led by King’s 17 who was followed by Baskin who finished with 15 points. Obach and D’Onna Matthews each scored 14 points for the Patriots, while Makenzi May hit three 3-pointers for nine points.

UT Tyler would go up by as many as 32 points in the second half.

For the game, the Patriots shot 47-percent, including 42-percent from beyond-the-arc, hitting 10 3-pointers in the victory.

UT Tyler has now reached the NCAA second-round for the second-straight season.
