Before family, friends, teammates and coaches, eight John Tyler High School students signed scholarships on Wednesday the JT Varsity Gymnasium.

Along with football letters, one student signed a trainer’s scholarship with two others inking academic scholarships.

JT’s valedictorian Emmanuel Daniels and salutatorian Bryce Holloway, both members of the Lions football team, inked academic scholarships.

Daniels, who played cornerback, signed with Texas A&M University and Holloway, who played guard, inked with the University of Texas at Austin. Daniels plans to major in biology with Holloway eyeing physics.

Kharis McFarland signed a trainer scholarship with Baylor University.

The football signing included safety Tyus Grayson (Arkansas Tech), offensive lineman Tra Minter (Texas College), wide receiver Jaivon Williams (Howard Payne University), defensive end Tabias Marshall (Howard Payne) and wide receiver/safety Michael Givens-Washington (Hardin-Simmons).

In December, linebacker Martrevious Allison signed with Syracuse University and defensive end Dekalen Goodson inked with the University of Houston.

JT head coach Ricklan Holmes addressed the assembly noting, “For these student-athletes this is not the end of a journey, but they beginning. They have worked hard for this day. … Parents I encourage you to continue to motivate. At college, not everyone is there to help motivate and keep them focused.”

Holmes also stressed that academics is so important when striving for athletic scholarships. He said it is all about getting the degree four or five years down the road.
