CARTHAGE – Troup knew what the mission was on Friday. The Tigers needed to duplicate what they did a week earlier when Troup rallied from 1-0 series deficit against Hughes Springs and sweep the doubleheader to advance.
Beckville did not give Troup that chance.
The Bearcats scored six runs in the bottom of the first and the Tigers couldn’t answer in an eventual 10-3 loss Friday at Panola College’s Jim Reeves Memorial Baseball Field.
The loss meant Beckville swept their best-of-three Class 3A Region II quarterfinals series. Beckville won Game 1 9-4 on Thursday at Bullard Brook Hill.
Troup completes its season in over a decade with an 18-9-2 record.
Beckville (25-6) advances to the 3A Region II semifinals against the winner of Gunter and Famersville, which are tied 1-1 in their series with the decider on Saturday.
Beckville’s Trey Lindsay held Troup to three runs on five hits in a complete-game victory with no walks and five strikeouts.
The Tigers went in front 1-0 in the top of the first when Rowdy Howell delivered a one-out single, stole second and scored on an RBI single from Colton Whitsell.
Beckville took control back with six runs in the bottom of the inning of Troup starter Josh Parker, who was relieved in the frame by Weslee Ross.
Trailing 9-1, Troup added single runs to its tally sixth and seventh. In the sixth, Howell reached on a dropped third strike and eventually scoring on a fielder’s choice by Justin Nelson.
In the seventh, Parker scored on an error after he was hit by a pitch leading off.
The Tigers couldn’t cut into the lead any more though.
Whitsell finished 2 for 4 with an RBI in the Troup loss.
