- Whitehouse native A.J. Minter made his Major League debut Wednesday for the Atlanta Braves.
A.J. Minter is a major league pitcher.
The Whitehouse native came on in the top of the ninth inning for the Atlanta Braves Wednesday in a 9-6 game against the Seattle Mariners.
The former Bullard Brook Hill and Texas A&M standout delivered a scoreless frame of relief with two strikeouts.
According to a report by Fox Sports South, Minter found out that he had been called up late Tuesday evening and immediately called his parents.
“Dad, I got some bad news. You can’t go to work tomorrow,” Minter said of the phone call. “You got to come watch your son pitch in the big leagues.”
They were both in attendance to watch Minter’s debut.
Taken in the second round of the 2015 draft out of A&M, Minter battled through Tommy John surgery. He flew up the minor league system last year, but the Braves opted to take it slow with Minter and not call him up because of his injury history.
An offseason regimen at Accelerate Performance Enhancement Center (APEC) in Tyler helped get him ready for this season. Again, he dealt with injuries, which delayed things, but after six strong relief outings for Triple-A Gwinnett, he received the call. This year in the minors, Minter pitched 24.1 innings with a 3.3A ERA.
He has a 0.00 ERA after one inning of work as a Major League pitcher.
