TYLER — Hubert Melvin Sherrell passed away on Dec 6, 2023 in Tyler, Texas. Hubert was born February 5, 1935 in Covington, Oklahoma to Harlen Sherrell and Rachel Williamson Sherrell. In 1940, Hubert moved to White Oak, Texas where his father worked as a Boiler Fireman for Sinclair Oil and Gas Company. After graduating from White Oak High School in 1953, Hubert attended Kilgore Junior College on a band scholarship where he earned an associate degree in accounting and met his bride, Nancy Marie Smith from Longview. They were married on November 20, 1956. In 1957, Hubert enlisted in the U.S. Army Reserve, where he served until his discharge in 1963. Hubert and Nancy moved to Tyler in 1960 and went to work for Fairway Oil Company. In 1971, Hubert went to work for W.E. Curtis at Tyler Building Systems where he served as CFO and minority partner until 2000. Hubert remained in an active role in both Tyler Building Systems and East Texas Erectors until the Fall of 2023.
Hubert and Nancy purchased land in Flint, TX in 1969 and moved there with their two children where he spent the summers baling hay and raising cattle. Hubert and Nancy joined First Baptist Church Gresham and were members for over 50 years. He was a deacon, served as a music director, and sang in several musical groups within the church. They transferred their membership to the Flint Community Church in 2021, where they reunited with their long-time friend and pastor, Rev. Roy Thoene. In his off time, Hubert could be found tinkering in his shop “fixing” numerous things from lawnmowers to tractors – always with a smile on his face.
Hubert is predeceased by his sisters Margie Geyer (Hilbert) and Irene Geyer (Wallace); and his brother Julius “Sony” Sherrell (Joanne). Hubert is survived by his wife Nancy of 67 years; his brother Dean Sherrell (Linda) of Longview, Texas; sisters Mary Lou Emerson (Maynard) of Longview, Texas; and Arlene Hicks (Wayne) of Longview, Texas.
Hubert is also survived by his two children, Jon Sherrell (Jaclyn) of Tyler, Texas and Amanda Mayfield (Tod) of Amarillo, Texas. He is survived by his six grandchildren: Matthew Thomas Sherrell, Claire Elizabeth Mayfield, Jack Christian Sherrell, Chloe Anne Mayfield, Andrew Braley Sherrell, and Molly Ann Sherrell. Hubert is also survived by numerous cousins, nieces, and nephews.
Honorary Pallbearers are Bobby Curtis, Roger Boggs, Tod Mayfield, Mike Rowe, Dean Sherrell, Matt Sherrell, Jack Sherrell, and Drew Sherrell.
A celebration of life service will be held at 1:00 p.m. Saturday, January 6 at Southside Baptist Church, 8875 Old Jacksonville Hwy, Tyler, TX 75703 with Rev. Roy Thoene and Joe Thigpen officiating.
