CHARLESTON, SC — Betty Jo Dunahoe, 87, formerly of Tyler, died August 27, 2024, in Charleston, SC after a short illness. A graveside service will be held Tuesday, September 3, 2024, at Cathedral in the Pines Cemetery beginning at 10:00 a.m. with Rev. Ken Brumley officiating. Services are under the direction of Stewart Family Funeral Home.
Born in Blanks, LA on September 6, 1936, to William Joseph and Ruby Guerin Blanchard, Betty Jo grew up in Woodville, MS and graduated from Woodville High School in 1954. She graduated from Southern Baptist Hospital Mather School of Nursing in 1957 and worked as a Registered Nurse in Louisiana, Texas, Washington, and Oregon during her career. Betty Jo became the School Nurse at John Tyler High School in Tyler, TX and retired from the Tyler Independent School District after 23 years of service. An active member of Green Acres Baptist Church, she taught Sunday School and was a part of the intercessory prayer group. She lived in Tyler for over 44 years before moving to South Carolina.
She was preceded in death by her parents Willie and Ruby Blanchard, her brother, William (Bill) Blanchard, Jr, as well as a brother and sister who died as infants.
She is survived by her sister, Doris Baker of Baton Rouge, LA; three children; Colonel Paul Brent Dunahoe, USMC (Ret.) of Mount Pleasant, SC; Elizabeth Ann Barnes of St. Paul, MN; John Christian Dunahoe of Palm Springs, CA; six grandchildren, four great-grandchildren and four nephews and nieces.
