HOUSTON (AP) – Authorities say multiple gunshots were fired overnight into the Houston office of state Sen. John Whitmire.

No one was in the building when the gunshots erupted early Thursday morning and a motive wasn’t immediately clear.

Whitmire told the Houston Chronicle the damage was discovered when staff arrived for work. He says at least four slugs have been found and called the incident “concerning in this day and time.”

Houston police along with Texas Rangers are investigating.

Whitmire is a Democrat who was first elected to the Senate in 1982. His Senate district includes north Houston and parts of Harris County.
