LANE CITY, Texas (AP) — The Lower Colorado River Authority has broken ground for a South Texas reservoir meant to help increase water supplies.

Ceremonies were held Wednesday for the project near Lane City, in Wharton County. The area is about 50 miles southwest of Houston.

The Texas Water Development Board is providing $250 million for the reservoir. The complex should be operating in 2017 to serve cities, homes and businesses in Central Texas.

The Austin-based LCRA estimates construction will involve about 100 workers. The reservoir will be built off the main channel of the lower Colorado River.

Officials say it’s the first project allowing the LCRA to store significant amounts of water near the Texas Gulf Coast.

Lakes Buchanan and Travis are the LCRA’s main reservoirs.
