Don’t Mess With Texas Trash-Off set for Saturday

The 2014 Don’t Mess With Texas Trash-Off annual cleanup is scheduled for Saturday across Texas and in East Texas.

Volunteers collected more than 7.5 million pounds of trash during last year’s statewide cleanup, according to a news release. The event encourages Texans to join forces to clear the million of pieces of trash that accumulate on the state’s roadsides.

Volunteers come from all walks of life: students, business leaders, civic and nonprofit organizations, individuals, families, community groups, sororities, fraternities, sports teams and military.

The trash-off is the single largest one-day cleanup event in the state and serves as Texas’ signature event for the Great American Cleanup, the nation’s largest community improvement program, the release states. The Don’t Mess with Texas Trash-Off is part of TxDOT’s litter prevention program, which includes Don’t Mess with Texas, Adopt-a-Highway and a grassroots partnership with Keep Texas Beautiful.
