Google Glass makes appearance in the OR. Google Glass, eyeglasses that are a wearable computer, have been popping up in operating rooms, including Duke Medical Center in Durham, North Carolina, and a children’s hospital in New York. Surgeons are using the glasses as a nonintrusive way to record surgeries. Google has sold the glasses to surgeons, who act as testers, for $1,500, according to the New York Times.

Measles cases hit a 20-year high. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recently announced that there have been 288 reported cases of measles in from January through the end of May — the highest number of cases in the first five months since 1994. The CDC states that nearly all of the cases were associated with “international travel by unvaccinated people.”

More than half of all American pets are fat. Cats and dogs are catching up with their human counterparts, as more than half are overweight or obese. A recent survey released by the Association for Pet Obesity Prevent found that just over half of dogs and 58 percent of cats fell into this category. Overweight and obese pets are at risk for health problems, including worsening of joint problems, worsening of heart conditions, and type 2 diabetes. Veterinarians recommend that pet owners measure their animals’ food portions, cut back on treats and ensure they receive 20 to 30 minutes of exercise each day.
