Whitehouse woman indicted in connection with alleged abuse of 13-year-old children

A Whitehouse woman accused of abusing two 13-year-old children has been  indicted by a Smith County grand jury.

Cheryl Layne, 43, was charged with injury to a child along with her husband, Mark Layne, in September after the kids reported physical abuse, according to the Smith County Sheriff’s Office.



She was indicted on injury to a child during the Jan. 30 session. Her bond is set at $250,000, according to the indictment list.

On Sept. 13, the sheriff’s office responded to Whitehouse ISD after the children reported the abuse to the Whitehouse Police Department school resource officer. Child Protective Services responded and took custody of the children, the news release stated.

Visible injuries were seen on two of the children after authorities searched the couple’s residence on Sept. 13, according to the Smith County Sheriff’s Office.

At the time of their arrests, KYTX-CBS19 reported that Mark Layne, 49, is a 21-year veteran of the Tyler Police Department as a patrol officer. He is on administrative leave, according to information provided by Tyler Police Department spokesman Don Martin.

In September, Mark and Cheryl Layne surrendered to authorities after warrants were issued for their arrests. Each had a bond of $75,000. They were booked into Smith County Jail Sept. 17 and released the same day after posting bond. Injury to a child is a third-degree felony, according to the Smith County Sheriff’s Office.

Mark Layne has not been indicted. His last jail records show him being booked and released.
