UPDATE: Counseling services for students and staff are being made available today in Whitehouse ISD after the announcement yesterday that a body found behind a Whitehouse business earlier in the week was that of a Whitehouse student.
The body found March 17 behind a business on Texas Highway 110 near Whitehouse has been identified as Jacob Hamilton Garrett, 14, of Whitehouse.
Sheriff Larry Smith told a news conference Thursday afternoon that the cause of death is not homicide. But he would not elaborate beyond that.
The Smith County Sheriff’s Office received notification from Southwestern Institute of Forensic Science in Dallas after dental records were used for the identification, according to an office news release.
Garrett’s family reported him as a runaway on Feb. 13 and the Sheriff’s Office used the media in an attempt to get the information out to the public.
The autopsy revealed that no apparent foul play was involved, however toxicology and other test results are pending and could take several weeks to determine the cause of death.
