Five people were injured in a wreck involving a Tyler ISD school bus.
Don Martin, Tyler Police Department public information officer, said the accident happened at the intersection Old Omen Road and McDonald Road when the bus driver turned left from McDonald onto Old Omen in front of a Black Chevy Tahoe.
The wreck occurred shortly after 3 p.m. The bus was loaded with 47 children from Clarkston Elementary School.
The driver of the Tahoe, 26-year-old Christian Fuentes and one child on the bus were taken to a local hospital, Martin said.
TISD spokeswoman Dawn Parnell said four students were taken by ambulance to Mother Frances Hospital. One had an abrasion to the forehead, two complained of headaches and one complained of shoulder pain, she said. Ms. Parnell said these were all non-lifethreatening injuries.
Campus administrators and a district nurse were at the hospital with the children.
The other students were transferred to another bus to continue their route and the district notified their parents, Ms. Parnell said.
The TISD bus driver, Richard Pittman, 66, of Chandler, received a citation for failure to yield right of way. Ms. Parnell said the district would conduct an investigation into the wreck.
“The safety of our students is the utmost (priority) and we take that very seriously and are working through details and will provide parents with updated information as it becomes available,” Ms. Parnell said.
