Ten-year-old Travis Salter, of Tyler, awoke early Friday morning to go fishing with his grandfather, David Bonilla, and his younger brother, Ethan Salter.

Travis’ hopes for success came true when he won bragging rights and the top prize of a new fishing pole at the fishing derby hosted by Meadow Lake Senior Living, a local retirement community in Tyler. The large pond on Meadow Lake’s property is stocked full of bass and perch.

“With Father’s Day coming up soon, we wanted to organize something special for families, and we opened up the fishing derby to the public,” Sue Kiple, marketing director at Meadow Lake Senior Living, said. “We have prizes, shaved ice and Chick- Fil -A has sponsored lunch for this event.”

Travis won grand prize for the kids’ fish derby, with a total of 435 points. The adult fish started at 10:15 a.m. and the winner, with 3990 points, was Chase Bonner, of Tyler. The prizes for the biggest fish were Academy Sports + Outdoors gift cards in the amounts of $75 for grand prize, $50 for first place, $40 for second place and $25 for third place.

Meadow Lake Senior Living is off of Old Jacksonville Highway. Residents of the facility and their families fish on the pond.
