The Tyler Morning Telegraph picked up several awards for sports and news photos, writing and advertising during the North and East Texas Press Assocation Awards for work done in 2019.
The newspaper took second overall for best newspaper and most awards.
Tyler Morning Telegraph Chief Photographer Sarah Miller and Cara Campbell swept first place for sports and news photos. They each submitted three photos of local athletes and news events.
Judges said of the sports photos, “Very sharp, love the facial expressions, unique angles and unusual photos, Great work!”
On the news photos, judges said, “(Sarah and Cara’s) photos best fit the definition of news photos. I love how they catch angles in court and the photo of the ambulance provides not just a look at the incident but a glimpse of the suspect.”
John Anderson won for a feature story on Christus Flight for Life pilot Lauren Sutherland. The judges said, “Great lead! Lauren sounds like a remarkable woman.” Sutherland was honored as the medical pilot of the year with a national and international award.
Danny Mogle, Anderson and assistance from Zak Wellerman won an award for the series of articles on the Legionnaires’ Disease incident in Tyler. Judges said the articles were of great interest. They said the news writing articles did not take first overall because one of the headlines had too many words.
The multi-media sales staff is led by Publisher Justin Wilcox, Advertising Director Alyssa Purselley-Hankins, and Multi-media account executives Connie Conaway, Paula White and Candace Pesta.
The staff won for the Best In Town section which was also an online section (https://tylerpaper.com/bestintown) and judges were impressed with the layout and design of the edition and the design and presentation of local advertisements in the Tyler Morning Telegraph and at tylerpaper.com.
In the overall general excellence category, the Tyler Morning Telegraph submitted several Sunday editions with four sections of local in depth features, news, events and stories in Inspire and the best features from around the nation, from news to entertainment. The newspaper took second as judges said it was hard to differentiate first from second, and there were national feature stories which took the paper to second.
“Everyone in the business puts out great content daily, so it’s nice to get recognized by prestigious organizations for the work,” said Anderson, the editor of the Tyler Morning Telegraph. “The staff won awards in every category they entered, and that might be the best time of the year, looking back at all of the great work and submissions. We take for granted the outstanding journalism taking place each day by the second posted online and in print for our readers.”
