Tyler Junior College is warning Smith County residents of what one official called “another false scam.”

TJC spokesman Fred Peters said men are reportedly selling magazine subscriptions on behalf of the college’s baseball team. The price is nearly $50 for an annual subscription, he said, and at least one individual stated that the money would go to a veterans home or veterans center.

Peters said this is not something TJC endorsed, but these types of activities do occur periodically. He said perpetrators tend to relate their activities to a school program.

“It’s just an opportunity for these individuals to prey upon those who know no better and make money for themselves,” he said.

Now, he said TJC wants to let people know about it and has posted something on the school’s Facebook page. He said numerous people are indicating that they encountered something similar.

He encouraged residents to report encounters to the appropriate law enforcement agency.
