The sound of guitar-strumming musicians picking harmonies filled the lobby of the Tyler Museum of Art Wednesday afternoon as dozens focused their attention on the soft melodies.

The Tyler Junior College Guitar Ensemble kicked off what is known as Coffee House at the Tyler Museum of Art, held in conjunction with the college’s fourth annual Arts Festival held throughout April on the TJC main campus.

The festival is a collaboration of “The Bell Tower Arts Journal,” International Day, Tyler Museum of Art and the TJC departments of art, music, theater, speech, dance and visual communications.

The festival will offer performances, exhibits, student film screenings, guest speakers and more at various times and locations across the TJC campus and at the Tyler Museum of Art.

“This is our fourth annual monthlong celebration of the TJC Festival of the Arts and it’s better than ever, thanks to our outstanding faculty and students,” said Dr. Linda Gary, dean of the TJC School of Humanities, Communications and Fine Arts and an Arts Festival organizer, according to a TJC news release.

Gary said the Arts Festival offers something from each area of TJC’s Cultural Arts District, including music, song, dance, art and a play.

Student involvement is key to the festival’s success, and each year a competition is held among TJC students to create an original Arts Festival logo. This year’s winner was Yara Jones, an art major from Tyler.

A few of the featured events include:

• Coffee House recitals at noon each Wednesday at the Tyler Museum of Art, featuring a different musical group each week.

• DanceFest featuring “Sleeping Beauty” at 2 and 7 p.m. Saturday and 2 p.m. Sunday in Wise Auditorium.

• “Hearing Each Other: Tolerance and Interfaith Dialogue,” a Distinguished Lecture Series panel discussion with Rabbi Neal Katz of Congregation Beth El, Anwar Khalifa of East Texas Islamic Society and the Rev. Ginger Brandt of First Christian Church, 10 a.m. April 17 in Wise Auditorium

• “Hamlet,” TJC Theatre’s final production of the 2017-18 season, Wednesday-Saturday, April 25-28, in Jean Browne Theatre.

The events are open to the public and attendance is free at all events except for DanceFest and “Hamlet,” which require tickets. DanceFest tickets are on sale now at https://tjcsleepingbeauty.eventbrite.com, and “Hamlet” tickets go on sale April 18 in the TJC Box Office.
