Want to know if a sex offender lives in your neighborhood or find out about Smith County’s most wanted criminals?
There’s an app for that.
The Smith County Sheriff’s Office recently released a new app that also features information about cold cases, news about road closures in the county and a way to submit a crime tip, among other features.
“The app links the office’s social media and website into one place,” Smith County Sheriff Larry Smith said. “This is a cost saving measure that will bring the capability of the two apps we were using into one. We are using drugs funds to pay for it and it is not costing the taxpayers any money.”
The app not only allows communication to the the residents of Smith County, it also can disperse internal information to Smith County deputies and employees in the office.
Not all of the features have been activated yet, but once the app is fully operational, the public can get push notifications about manhunts, active shooter situations and other emergency information.
Smith expects the app to be fully operational within a week.
Residents can use the app to comment on an employee or deputy in the Smith County Sheriff’s Office and see a current inmate roster. The app will allow family members and friends of jail inmates to add funds to a commissary account and see a bond amount. Smith said this feature will give the public general information that will eliminate unnecessary phone calls to the jail.
Residents can download the app for Apple iOS and Android devices on their phones’ app stores. The service is free to download and can be found by searching for Smith County Sheriff’s Office.
