Smith County sheriff campaign contributions top $150,000
Published 8:25 pm Friday, January 15, 2016
Campaign finance reports for Republican Smith County Sheriff candidates show the incumbent sheriff edged his challenger during the first fundraising cycle.
January campaign finance reports were due Friday and show contributions and expenditures by candidates between July and Dec. 31.
Sheriff Larry Smith reported $87,919 in contributions, $19,618 in spending and $77,825 on hand.
Supporters for challenger Chris Green donated $60,052 to his campaign during the reporting period. Green’s campaign spent $20,408 and maintained $52,313.
Both candidates had money in the bank in July 2015. Smith had $23,129 on hand at the time, while Green maintained $13,435.
Green, 53, is a retired 20-year Texas Parks and Wildlife game warden turned petroleum landman.
Smith, 59, has 34-year law enforcement career, which began in the Gregg County Sheriff’s Office and transitioned into federal agencies such as the Drug Enforcement Administration and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives before becoming sheriff.
There was a lot of money raised and spent during Smith and Green’s first campaigns for sheriff in 2012. The two candidates raised more than $500,000 to run protracted campaigns due to a runoff.
Green spent more than $282,000, while Smith spent more than $234,000.
Smith was the eventual winner with 53 percent of the vote compared to 47 percent for Green.
The two will face each other in the March 1 Republican Primary.
The winner would face Democrat Gary Pinkerton in the November general election. Pinkerton, 49, of Tyler, spent 28 years in the Smith County Sheriff’s Department during the tenure of retired Sheriff J.B. Smith. Pinkerton started as a jailer and rose through the ranks to chief deputy, third in command, in 2005. He oversaw the day-to-day jail operations for 16 years.
Pinkerton raised $4,345 and spent $2,744 since July, according to finance reports. He has $1,600 remaining in his coffer.
