Smith County was awarded a silver level certificate Wednesday from the Texas Healthy Communities Program for its performance on health indicators that impact chronic disease.

Smith County’s certificate, presented during a meeting of the Fit City Tyler health and wellness coalition, recognized that the county improved from an initial honorable mention rating of 65.5 points in 2014 to the silver level recognition with a score of 86.5 points last spring.

The county was assessed on eight health indicators including physical activity, healthy foods, healthy schools, healthy worksites, breastfeeding, tobacco control and prevention, cardiac and stroke care and health care quality improvement. – Betty Water
