East Texas under severe thunderstorm warning, tornado watch

Severe weather is passing through the region.

A tornado warning is now in effect for southeastern Wood County, Upshur County, western Marion County, southern Morris County, southeastern Titus County and Camp County until 5:30 p.m.



Around 4:35 p.m., a tornado-producing storm was located near Hawkins, or 15 miles west of Gilmer, moving northeast at 45 mph.

Damaging tornado and quarter-size hail is possible. The tornado was confirmed on a radar, according to NWS. 

Other locations impacted by this tornadic thunderstorm include Roeder, Rocky Mound, Harvard, Lafayette, Perryville, Center Point, Holly Springs, Bettie, Midway, and Grice.

There is potential for a tornado to form along with quarter-sized hail. Flying debris could be dangerous to those without shelter. Mobile homes could be damaged or destroyed, NWS. Damage to roofs, windows and vehicles is possible, and tree damage is likely, NWS said. 

NWS urges to take cover immediately. “Move to a basement or an interior room on the lowest floor of a sturdy building. Avoid windows. If you are outdoors, in a mobile home, or in a vehicle, move to the closest substantial shelter and protect yourself from flying debris,” the NWS said in an alert.

Northwestern Smith County, Central Wood County and West Central Upshur County were under a tornado warning until 4:45 p.m. according to the National Weather Service of Shreveport.

Around 3:55 p.m., a severe thunderstorm capable of producing a tornado was located near Lindale, or about 12 miles south of Mineola, moving northeast at 35 mph, according to NWS.

The City of Quitman asked resident earlier this afternoon to “seek shelter now,” noting there was reportedly rotation on the ground. 

There was reportedly a tornado in Van Zandt County with damage, according to CBS19.
