‘Santas for Seniors’ enters second year

For the second year, Meals On Wheels and the East Texas Radio Group will be delivering Christmas gifts to seniors with the “Santas for Seniors” program.
“We began the gift drive last year, and you really can’t imagine the surprise and joy expressed by our clients who, because of the community’s generosity, received a gift for Christmas. Many of our clients spend the holidays alone, and without this program, they wouldn’t have a Christmas gift,” said Mike Powell, Meals On Wheels President/CEO.
Residents who wish to help may donate new or gently used items now through the end of December.
Donated items will be delivered by some of your favorite radio personalities and Meals On Wheels volunteers and staff directly to homebound seniors.
Unwrapped gifts can be dropped off at the two East Texas Radio Group locations in Tyler (210 S. Broadway Ave.) and Longview (4408 U.S. Highway 259 North); Meals On Wheels Ministry at 3001 Robertson Road in Tyler, and the Starbucks Coffee in Tyler, next to Jason’s Deli.
Meals On Wheels has identified several basic areas of need, so when selecting a gift, consider purchasing an item in one of the following categories: winter apparel, such as jackets, shoes, robes, house shoes or socks; small home appliances such as toasters, microwaves, small heaters, telephones, clocks or radios; home, bed and bath items such as comforters/sheets; blankets or towels; gift cards such as Wal-Mart, Super 1 Foods, Walgreens or CVS; medical supplies such as diabetes kits; blood pressure kits or walking canes.
More drop-off locations will be announced, and if your business would like to collect donations, call Zoe Lawhorn at 903-525-0906.
You also may call Ms. Lawhorn with any questions regarding “Santas for Seniors.”
Meals On Wheels Ministry currently serves more than 3,000 seniors and homebound individuals in 30 communities across six counties including Gregg, Henderson, Smith, Upshur, Van Zandt and Wood counties. Meals On Wheels Ministry is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization that is dedicated to providing good nutritious meals, daily contacts and other support services that enable senior citizens and the disabled to remain independent and living in their own homes as long as possible.
