Pastor Rafael Cruz, father of Senator and presidential hopeful Ted Cruz, spoke at Rock Hill Baptist Church on Thursday.

Cruz was in East Texas to encourage pastors to take action and “restore our country to greatness.” He called on civic and religious leaders to take more active roles in their communities and not rely on the federal government.

Cruz was born in Matanzas, Cuba in 1939 and fled to America in 1957, where he went on to study at the University of Texas at Austin. He currently preaches at Faith Baptist Church in Houston.

“I want to talk to (the audience) about what the bible has to say about why we, as people of faith, need to be involved in a civic society,” Cruz said. “I’m also going to be talking about the same thing from a historical standpoint.”

Cruz also explained why he thinks his son is the right candidate for the Republican nomination.

“Ted is a man that speaks from the heart. He is not giving talking points,” Cruz said. “What he says is what he feels and what he is, and Ted has a great burden for this country. He loves this country and he wants to see this country restored to what has made America great.”

Cruz delivered a sermon following an introduction from a representative of the Kaufman County Tea Party and a brief speech by Kevin Chapman about the Chapman House charity. Cruz praised Chapman for the work his nonprofit does for addicts in Henderson County.

Cruz said voters can expect to see his son continue to fight the Obama administration.

“Right now we have the most lawless administration in the history of this country, and we need to get back to what made this country great …,” Cruz said. “He’s standing for principle and he’s not going to compromise those principles.”
