In addition to her work as an assistant at a dental facility, Petty Officer 1st Class Kimberly Elaine Risvold is committed to serving our nation as a Boatswain’s Mate in the United States Navy Reserve assigned to Naval Operational Support Center (NOSC) Shreveport.
Ms. Risvold, a 2004 Frankston High School graduate, is continuing her education at The University of Texas at Tyler in Human Resources.
She began her service with the Navy Reserve five years ago after completion of her active duty time. In her spare moments, Ms. Risvold is an active volunteer for the local t-ball team. Her service in the Navy Reserve assists her in the multiple endeavors she pursues.
“The Navy Reserves has allowed me to utilize my military experience and training in an effective matter within the civilian sector,” Ms. Risvold said. “The responsibilities that I found myself in at a young age molded me into a more assertive and dedicated asset to any employer.”
Ms. Risvold believes the Navy Reserve provides opportunities to both continue serving and remain pursuant of other interests.
“At the time of my contract renewal for the active duty component, I knew I needed to give my daughter, who was a year and a half at the time, more of a constant presence from her family,” Ms. Risvold said. “So I made the decision to transition into the Reserves which provided me with the stability to raise my daughter, and the opportunity to serve.”
While balancing a Navy and civilian career is a commitment, Ms. Risvold said she finds the two mutually beneficial.
“I am able to keep my qualifications and training requirements up to date. I use my vacation time at work for my annual training and it benefits my civilian career with all the experience I receive by advancing my responsibilities for the Reserves. It’s a win-win.”
Vice Admiral Braun, chief of the Navy Reserve, is proud to serve as the leader of such a talented and dedicated group of Sailors.
Tuesday marks 100 years of the United States Navy Reserve. Throughout the year, Navy Reserve units will be celebrating the accomplishments of Reserve Sailors past and present.
