A 35-year-old Mineola man has been arrested and charged with aggravated assault of a public servant after deputies say he shot at a patrol vehicle.
Smith County Sheriff’s Office deputies on Tuesday responded to a disturbance call at a property where Joshua Forrester’s camper trailer was parked.
A deputy sounded his air horn to alert the occupants of the trailer. Seconds later the deputy saw a muzzle flash coming from the window of the trailer.
Dash camera footage showed Forrester pointing a rifle out of the trailer’s window and shooting at the deputy’s patrol vehicle.
The deputy threw his vehicle into reverse to get out of the line of fire and called “shots fired” over his radio.
Forrester came out of the trailer and deputies took him into custody. A supervisor at the scene made the decision to take him in for a mental health evaluation.
After reviewing dash camera and body camera footage, the sheriff’s office determined there was justification to obtain a warrant for Forrester’s arrest.
Deputies served the warrant, arrested Forrester and charged him with aggravated assault of a public servant.
He was booked into the Smith County Jail shortly after 1 a.m. Thursday, according to jail records.
