Law enforcement officers took a man wearing body armor and transporting two handguns, rifles, “several high-capacity magazines” and knives into custody after a suspicious person traffic stop, according to a news release.
The man was stopped by a Texas Department of Public Safety trooper in the 12700 block of Highway 155 North in Tyler. While talking to the man, the trooper noticed an open bag in the passenger seat with the handguns and magazines in plain view.
The trooper secured the weapons and called for backup from the Smith County Sheriff’s Office, according to the news release. Deputies and detectives responded.
The man made threats against himself and others during an on-site interview and he was taken to a hospital for evaluation after law enforcement determined he might be a danger to himself and others. Once an evaluation there is complete, he will be taken to the Smith County Jail on weapons charges.
