Junior League presents awards, scholarships and $252K check

The Junior League of Tyler honored two club award winners and two academic scholarship recipients Monday during the organization’s May general membership meeting at Willowbrook Country Club in Tyler.

Jane Coker earned the Gertrude Windsor Sustainer of the Year Award, and Wendy Farmer received the Mahala Young Active of the Year award. The awards are named for former outstanding members of the League who made significant contributions to both the group and to Smith County.



Mrs. Coker joined the Junior League in 1990. She served on the Mistletoe & Magic committee, as treasurer, public relations chairwoman, fund development vice president and eventually president. As a sustainer, Mrs. Coker has served as an advisor for many committees and priority groups.

Mrs. Farmer joined the League in 2006. She has served on League Lines, Spring Sweep, Mistletoe & Magic and is currently the League’s Financial Vice President.

The league also announced the winners of its Beverly Beaird Young Woman Leadership Scholarship, an award that annually recognizes outstanding senior women who exhibit exemplary scholarship, volunteerism and dedication to the community. This year’s recipients include Huyen Nguyen and Melanie Webb, seniors at Robert E. Lee High School.

Ms. Nguyen plans to attend the University of Texas – Tyler, where she will pursue a degree in pharmacy, and Ms. Webb plans to attend Texas Christian University, where she will pursue a degree in communications.

The League also presented a $252,138.84 check that will go to helping 17 Smith County agencies throughout the community.
