Gohmert, McKellar to face off in Texas 1st Congressional District for the fourth time

Incumbent Louie Gohmert will once again face Shirley J. Mckellar in the general election for the District 1 congressional seat.

Gohmert led the Republican field with 88.2 percent with 187 of 248 precincts reporting, and McKellar led the Democratic field with 60.3 percent of the vote over UT Tyler Professor Brent Beal.


Gohmert, who faced Republican challengers Anthony Culler and Roshin Rowjee in the primary, will face McKellar in the general election for the fourth time. Gohmert defeated McKellar by a 47.6 point margin in the 2016 general election.

Gohmert has held the seat since 2004. He faced no opposition in primary races until 2016.

In the 2016 Republican primary, Gohmert took 89.1 percent of the vote in Smith County and 82 percent of the vote districtwide.

Culler received 4.1 percent of the vote in the 2016 race.
