A former Bishop Gorman basketball coach who was charged with burglary with intent to commit a sex offense pleaded guilty to a lesser charge on Monday.

Jakeal Latrenton Lockett, 25, pleaded guilty to a second-degree felony in 7th District Court on Monday, the day he was scheduled to appear for a jury trial.

Lockett pleaded guilty to burglary with intent to commit an assault by offensive touching. His lawyer, Buck Files, is seeking to have him sentenced to seven years of deferred adjudication, which is essentially probation.

The pleaded charge is a reduction of the original indictment of burglary with intent to commit a sexual assault, which would have required Lockett to register as a sex offender for the rest of his life.

Richard Vance, assistant district attorney for Smith County, told Judge Kerry Russell that he spoke at length with the victim and her father, and they were on board with the proposed resolution of the case.

Russell is not scheduled to approve sentencing for another three weeks. A sentencing hearing is scheduled for Sept. 20.

The University of Texas at Tyler police department arrested Lockett March 4 after an investigation revealed he entered a woman’s UT Tyler apartment about 1:30 a.m. on Feb. 24, according to the affidavit. He since has been in the Smith County Jail for the past five months.

Lockett is accused of going into the victim’s bedroom, sitting on her bed, waking her, grabbing her with both arms, pulling her close to him and attempting to kiss her without her consent, according to the arrest warrant affidavit.

He is accused of hugging the victim at least three times and attempting to kiss her each time, eventually laying on top of the victim while she was in bed, according to the affidavit.

“Through the victim’s continued resistance against Jakeal Lockett and his sexual advances the victim was able to push Lockett off of her body utilizing her hands, legs and feet where he then stood from the bed and began to exit,” the arrest warrant affidavit reads.

The document goes on to say Lockett had taken the master key from his girlfriend, something she realized when it turned up missing and she needed it to let another student into their apartment. His girlfriend was a resident assistant at the time.

Lockett’s girlfriend told investigators he knew her PIN number, which would allow entry into all apartments in the Liberty Landing apartment complex, according to the arrest warrant affidavit.

The document also said Lockett went to his girlfriend’s apartment after the Feb. 24 incident with the victim.

Lockett was an assistant basketball coach at Bishop Gorman Catholic School at the time of the incident. However, the school placed him on leave March 5 pending the outcome of the case and prohibited him from having any contact with students after learning of the incident, according to a statement at the time.

The school said at the time there was no indication of improper conduct occurring on the Bishop Gorman campus or with students and that any information concerning criminal activity should be reported to law enforcement.

A Bishop Gorman spokesman said Monday that Lockett was no longer employed at the school.
