TYLER (KYTX) – The Smith County Fire Marshal’s Office is moving forward with an internal investigation into the wife of Constable John Smith and the statements she made to the media and investigators following his shooting incident.
The Sheriff’s Office has ruled its investigation closed, calling the shooting a suicide attempt.
“Based on information we received with prior interviews that we received and information from the investigation conducted by the Sheriff’s Office, we felt that it was necessary to take a further look at everything just to make sure there’s no wrongdoing,” said Jay Brooks, the Smith County Fire Marshal.
Liz Smith is a resource officer in the Lindale Independent School District. The Fire Marshal holds the commissions for those officers under an agreement reached last year.
“Deputy Smith is a peace officer. And she’s a peace officer 24 hours a day, 7 days a week,” Brooks said. “And we have to make sure we maintain the integrity of this office.”
Brooks gave no timetable for the investigation. Smith remains on the job pending its outcome. Brooks said he has had no problems with her performance as a resource officer.
