With their youngest member being a sophomore in high school, and the oldest a World War II veteran, there should be no surprise the East Texas Men in Harmony Barbershop Chorus is a unique group of guys who all have one thing in common - a love for music.
The singing group consists of 50 males who vary widely in not only age, but also professions. Tyler resident Johnny Martin joined the group three years ago after making a New Year's resolution to improve his singing voice.
"I had never had any training, but had always loved to sing, so joining the group was an effort to get better at singing," Martin said. "We give each other pointers and practice weekly on Thursdays."
At 29, Martin happens to be one of the younger members of the chorus, and admits he enjoys the time he spends performing with his fellow chorus members.
On Valentine's Day, the Men in Harmony Chorus will break up into multiple quartets to perform singing Valentines for a fee during a singing Valentine fundraiser. The group will perform from 8 a.m. until 7:30 p.m. Feb. 13 and 14 for anyone within 40 miles of Tyler. The money raised goes towards their nonprofit organization, new costumes and competitions.
The cost is $40.
"It's usually funny when the wives or girlfriends send us to sing to their husbands or boyfriend at work. They get so embarrassed," Martin said. "We hand them a rose and a card also."
The group is always looking for new members of any age. To pre-order a singing valentine from the Men In Harmony Chorus, or to inquire about joining the group, call 903-561-7833 or visit www.etmeninharmony.com.
