BROWNSBORO — An East Texas elementary school student recently walked the runway with a star athlete.

Cami Clements, a student at Brownsboro Elementary School, was selected to be a model for the Children’s Cancer Fund 34th annual gala, “A Knight to Remember,” where she was escorted by Dallas Cowboys quarterback Dak Prescott.

Brownsboro ISD took to social media to celebrate the occasion and Cami’s special night.

“We are so thrilled she was able to participate in such an amazing fundraiser, and are so very proud of our little bear! You looked beautiful Cami!” the district said in a Facebook post.

A recent post from the Children’s Cancer Fund (CCF) said B-Cell Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia doesn’t stop the young girl. She began her journey with leukemia at the age of 3, according to CCF.

“Known for her love of music, dancing, and giving hugs, Cami’s personality shines through in her playful tea parties, rocking her baby dolls, and helping her Mommie and Mamaw in the kitchen,” CCF said on a fundraising page.

Born with Down syndrome Trisomy 21, Cami spent time in the NICU in her early days, setting the tone for her fighting spirit she carries with her today.

“Despite the challenges, Cami is a true social butterfly that embraces life and connects with others through hugs,” the CCF webpage continued. “Throughout her cancer journey, she encountered various inpatient stays for side effects, completing chemotherapy on November 12, 2021. Despite daily challenges arising from Down syndrome and enduring side effects of chemotherapy, Cami lives each day to the fullest.”

The CCF stated Cami loves “being the center of attention,” so she was really looking forward to the gala.

According to a Facebook page titled “Team Cami,” Cami had a “blast and was truly treated like a true Princess.”

Prescott said in a video posted to the CCF website that it’s just as inspiring and rewarding to him as it is to the children participating. “… That’s what’s so special about this night,” he said.

Her mother is a “lifelong Cowboys fan,” the post stated, adding more excitement to the evening.

Cami had a chance to meet Dallas Cowboys cheerleaders at the event, which was held April 19 at the Hilton Anatole in Dallas. A record-breaking $2.7 million was raised at the gala, according to the Children’s Cancer Fund.

In an Instagram post, the CCF described it as a “storybook evening for 50 young cancer fighters” like Cami who participated. The models, who range between the ages of 6 to 17 years old, walk the runway alongside celebrities.

Troy Aikman, hall-of-fame quarterback, and Prescott were honorary co-chairs, according to the organization’s website. Emberli Pridham was gala chair.

The event was a night filled with entertainment, dinner, a live auction, and the fashion show featuring cancer patients.

A nonprofit based in Dallas, the Children’s Cancer Fund helps children in their fight against cancer through strategic investments in research and care in North Texas.
