Ben Wheeler rallies to save Christmas for local small business

Gum Creek Mercantile on Texas 64 in Ben Wheeler suffered major damage after storms hit early on Sunday.

Gum Creek Mercantile, owned by Joey Stanger and Shaun and Laura Crook, features custom wood flooring and doors, home furnishings, décor and other items This would typically end the season for a small business but not in Ben Wheeler.



With a rallying of support from the community, Gum Creek is moving into the downtown area across from Moore’s Store Restaurant in a one-day move planned for Thurssday. The move will be made possible through helop from the community, including assistance from the Ben Wheeler Arts and Historic Foundation, Door Control Services and other local businesses and neighbors.

“We never expected this and the support and help from our little community has been a bigger impact than can be expressed,” Laura Crook said in a statement.

On Thursday, several volunteers will help pack up and unpack Gum Creek for a Christmas Grand Opening at 4 p.m. Friday, Dec. 18.

“Please come out and join us on Friday evening and all day Saturday as we celebrate Christmas miracles, friends and show what the love of a small community can do,” Laura Cook said in a statement. “We will have hot cider, warm hugs and plenty of cheer – after all we have so much to be thankful for this year.”
