BULLARD — Police have released the identities of three who were found dead and a baby who was injured in a Bullard home on Sunday night.
Tatyanna Smith, 25, and her two children, 4-year-old Madilynn “May May” Evans, and 2-year-old Maison “Mace Mace” Evans, died by gunshots Sunday evening, and Smith’s other child, 8-month-old Lyric Minter, is in stable condition at a hospital in Dallas, Bullard Police Department Det. Judith Tuell said Tuesday afternoon.
Police are investigating the case as a homicide and emphasized there is no threat to the public.
Officers responded to a call around 6:55 p.m. Sunday in the 500 block of Guinn Street in Bullard, near the high school. An officer found four people in the home; Smith, Madilynn and Maison were pronounced dead at the scene while Lyric was transported to a hospital in Tyler and reportedly in critical condition that night.
“Once the location was secured, we requested Smith County Sheriff’s Crime Scene Investigation Unit,” Bullard Police Chief Jeff Bragg said. “They came out to the location and processed the scene.”
Eventually, law enforcement agencies were able to secure the scene, stating there was no threat to the community.
Lyric has since been transferred to Dallas for advanced care, Bragg said Tuesday. Tuell said the baby, injured by a gunshot, is in stable condition as of Tuesday afternoon.
The bodies of the three deceased were sent to the Southwest Institute of Forensic Science in Dallas County for autopsies, Bragg said.
The Bullard Police Department could also not elaborate about the possibility of a suspect but emphasized there is no threat to the community.
Police are continuing their investigation and treating the case as a homicide.
“We’ve spoken with numerous individuals surrounding the case,” Bragg said Tuesday. “We’re trying to inform everybody as much as possible, as much as we can, without hindering the investigation.”
The Bullard community has reacted with shock and sadness regarding the tragedy.
“It doesn’t make you feel comfortable with it happening right there, in your face,” a neighbor, who asked to remain anonymous, said to CBS19 in an interview. “I’ve only ever seen crimes on TV, so having it right there is kind of just a dose of reality.”
The neighbor shared more about what she saw that night.
“I went out to get or drop the trash into our bin at some time after 7 p.m., and there was already six to seven police cars,” she told CBS19. “We knew it was bad when after about an hour or so, they packed up all the life saving measures, and we saw a medical examiner or a detective.”
As the investigation continues, residents in the area are still saddened to see such a tragedy unfold in their small community.
“It still scares us. I mean we know that it’s not, ‘it doesn’t happen here.’ That’s not true,” neighbor said. “People feel that way, but it’s not true. Either way, it sucks. It’s really heartbreaking.”
In response to this tragedy, a GoFundMe campaign has been organized for the family of the Evans children. The fundraiser is organized by Ashley Robertson, who is the sister of Thomas Evans Sr., who is the father of Madilynn and Maison. The fundraiser aims to raise $30,000 to cover unexpected funeral costs and other expenses as the family navigates this loss. As of 11:05 p.m. Tuesday, $14,195 had been raised.
