Jarvis Christian College in Hawkins engages young scholars to prepare them for life-long learning and meaningful careers. The only HBCU affiliated with the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ), Jarvis remains dedicated to its mission and purpose, and today “prepares students intellectually, socially, spiritually and personally for professional and graduate studies, productive careers, and to function effectively in a global and technological society.” Jarvis is a diverse campus of 763 students (80 percent African-American; 20 percent are non-African-American). Through its curriculum, research and scholarship, the college provides quality academic programs, career assistance and placement, and an array of student support services. Dennis Moreau, owner of The Burger Grind, said the name derives from the daily grind — hard work that men and women alike put in to keep the dream alive — and because they grind their meat fresh daily.
