During all of July, Cavender’s sold paper torches at each of its Texas stores in support for Special Olympics Texas athletes. Available in $1, $5 or $10 options, these torches were personalized with the donor’s name, or the name of the person the donor was honoring, and hung throughout the stores.
“After years of successful engagement with Cavender’s, we were beyond thrilled to team up, once again, for a 2019 initiative. We exceeded last year’s fundraising, raising a total of $28,087. The wonderful staff of Cavender’s across Texas, as well as LETR members and SOTX athletes, made this happen,” said Miguel Quezada, Chief Development Officer for Special Olympics Texas.
Dozens of SOTX athletes and LETR members joined stores across the state of Texas during a day celebrating the annual fundraiser. The cowboy boot and western wear retailer has been a generous supporter of SOTX since 2015 and has raised nearly $68,000 over four years, not counting 2019’s final fundraising numbers. Funds raised will go toward providing quality sports competition and training for more than 58,800 children and adults with intellectual disabilities in the state.
“Cavender’s is proud to support SOSTX each summer with this campaign. Hats off to our loyal customers who are incredibly generous with their donations to support these special athletes,” said Jennifer Green, Cavender’s Public Relations and Special Events manager.
Texas Silver Haired Legislature
VaLita Waits was among the sworn delegates to the Texas Silver Haired Legislature as an East Texas Representative for the East Texas Area on Aging Agency under the auspices of the East Texas Council of Governments.
After being sworn in as a legislator, she was appointed to serve on the Health and Human Services Committee and the Communications Committee and was elected as its vice chair.
Speaker Rhonda Rogers also appointed Waits as the editor of the 18th Silver Directory. She has been an attorney for more than 35 years and is a native Tylerite.
She has served on many boards of directors, including Smith County Bar Foundation, Bethesda Clinic, PATH, Justice for Our Neighbors; and as a founding board for Court Appointed Special Advocates and Tyler Metropolitan Chamber of Commerce.
“As a new Silver Haired Legislator, I look forward to serving as an advocate for my fellow seniors in the state of Texas regarding issues that are peculiar to seniors.”
