Landmark Title Inc. and the Kyle Lake Foundation served as presenting sponsors for the 13th annual Kyle Lake Memorial Golf Tournament on May 6 at The Cascades Golf & Country Club in Tyler.
“The foundation appreciates the sponsors and teams that helped make our 13th annual Kyle Lake Memorial Golf Tournament a success. We had an outstanding turnout with 31 teams participating,” tournament chair Jim Rex said.
Established as a nonprofit organization in March 2007, the Kyle Lake Foundation exists to memorialize the former pastor of University Baptist Church in Waco.
The author of two books, "Understanding God's Will" and "(RE)Understanding Prayer," Lake, who was born and raised in Tyler, impacted thousands for Christ with his Christ-centered life, contagious personality and effective communication style, according to a news release.
He was electrocuted on Oct. 30, 2005, before 800 worshippers while preparing to baptize a former Baylor University student.
The Lake family seeks to continue the focus of Kyle's ministry, which is making the presence and message of Christ both real and meaningful to an ever-changing world, through the foundation that bears Kyle's name.
Since its inception, the foundation has awarded 86 scholarships, been instrumental in planting at least eight churches, and donated 41 defibrillators to churches and organizations. Many area ministries benefit from the proceeds of the tournament each year.
Foundation board member Deanna Sims, who is also chair of the Kyle Lake Scholarship committee, recognized the students selected to receive foundation scholarships. Recipients are selected based on demonstrated Christian character and leadership through their chosen sport, at least a 3.0 GPA, and a letter of recommendation.
These seniors will receive a $2,500 scholarship to the college of their choice. The recipients from Robert E. Lee High School were Madeline Bice, Meghan Romines and Oscar Perdomo. Recipients from Brook Hill High School were Caleb Collins, Madeline Reed and Hayden Hommel.
Committee members for the 2019 Memorial Tournament included: Jim Rex (chair), Gary Adams, Bill Coates, Dick Ellis, Kristi Lake Fuller, Bob Green, David Lake, Jody Lake, Jona Lake, Shirley Lake and Scott Richardson.
