Prophets & Outlaws, a Dallas band that promotes its music as Texas soul, is set to perform 8 p.m. Saturday at the Music City Grill & Smokehouse in Lindale.
The five-piece band’s original music incorporates country, soul and blues elements.
The band formed about a decade ago when some of the members were still in high school in Dallas and were being exposed to a wide range of music, said information from the band.
Over the years, they have recorded five LPs and have toured throughout the region.
“Over the course of their time as a touring and recording outfit, Prophets and Outlaws have positioned themselves as a R&B-tinged alternative to the standard country styling that populates most of the Texas music landscape,” music critic Kelly Dearmore, wrote for Lone Star Music Magazine in reviewing he band’s LP “V.”
The band is made up of Matt Boggs as lead vocalist, Stevie G on lead guitar, Jamie “Jelly” Ringholm on keyboards, CJ Thompson on bass and James Guckenheimer on drums. All the members are singers.
Also performing will be Hannah Dot Cook. Tickets cost $10 and are available at texasmusiccity.net.
ELVIS TRIBUTE ARTIST
Elvis Presley impersonator Travis Powell will perform songs from Elvis’ 1968 television comeback special and 1970s concert years at 7 p.m. Saturday at Gilmer Civic Center.
Powell will wear a black leather outfit like the one Elvis wore for the comeback special, singing songs such as “Don’t Be Cruel” and “Hound Dog.” The second part of the show will feature Powell wearing the iconic Las Vegas-era white jumpsuit singing such songs as “American Trilogy” and “If I Can Dream.”
Powell, a 36-year old Shelby, North Carolina, native, said he fell in love with Elvis when he was 4 years old. His parents taped the “Aloha from Hawaii” special and shared it with him. After that, Powell was hooked.
“Basically all he had to do was walk onstage and smile. He didn’t have to sing,” Powell said. “He could have sang the phone book and made it exciting. He had the ability to take any song and make it his own, and that is hard to do.”
Powell said the key to being a convincing Elvis or any other legendary performer is twofold.
“The key to being a good tribute artist is believing in what you do,” Powell said. “You might think I’m crazy but a bunch of tribute artists are not die-hard, not 100 percent fans of those they play. I think to be good you have to believe in what you are doing. You have to be a fan.”
Moses Snow, a 15-year-old rising Elvis tribute artist, will open the show. Both stars will be backed by the multi-artist tribute band Spinout. East Texas’ Shake Rattle & Roll also will perform.
