When a recent show at APEX (Actor’s Preparatory Exchange) Theatre 20 was canceled, the creative staff decided to give longtime collaborators Hunter Regian and Matthew Butler a chance to shine.
With only three weeks to organize a new show, the two decided to put together an original performance. The result is “(under)Current,” a show featuring song-and-dance numbers from contemporary Broadway hits, such as “Spring Awakening” and the quirky “Avenue Q.”
“We wrote the script, we put the songs together,” said Butler. “We brainstormed (about) which songs we liked in one night and then started figuring out who we knew (to cast).”
Butler was last seen as the title character in Tyler Junior College’s performance of “Sweeney Todd.” Regian most recently was stage manager of APEX’s “Night mother.”
APEX director and educator Hannah Morris will be puppeteer for the “Avenue Q” number which also features Butler.
Tickets cost $20 and can be purchased on the theater’s website, www.ap

Performances are set for 7:30 p.m. today and Saturday at the theater, 719 W. Front St. It is not recommended for children.
