Malakoff’s Mike Jones carries the ball against Franklin in the first quarter Thursday at AT&T Stadium in Arlington.

ARLINGTON — In the mid 2000s, Houston rapper Mike Jones burst onto the scene and had everybody asking, “Who?”

Almost 20 years later, Malakoff quarterback Mike Jones is letting everyone know who he is.

The junior added to his legend by leading the Tigers to their first state championship victory — 14-7 over two-time reigning state champion Franklin in the Class 3A Division I Championship Game Thursday evening at AT&T Stadium.

“It’s unreal,” Jones said, “especially being the first one. I am speechless. I don’t know what to say about it. I took the final knee, and the clock hit 0, and I could barely breathe.”

Jones threw for 140 yards and two touchdowns on 10 of 14 passing, and he ran for another 103 yards on 21 carries to earn Offensive MVP honors.

The rapper Mike Jones was known for saying his phone number — (281) 330-8004 — in his songs. Jones has his own numbers — 171 completions, 2,620 yards passing, 31 touchdowns passing, 819 yards rushing and 14 rushing touchdowns.

So for this Mike Jones, who is younger than the generation that grew up listening to the rapper, how did he discover his name twin?

“It started in middle school, we had some coaches that left already, Tyler Wilbanks and Coach Humphreys,” Jones said. “They bet me I wouldn’t do it at a middle school pep rally, so I went up and said, it’s your boys Mike Jones, and the whole football team said, ‘Who?.’”

Jones, who is also a standout baseball player at Malakoff, says he uses Mike Jones for his walkup music.

“Everybody loves it,” Jones said. “I try to stay humble with those things, but they love doing the stuff with the ‘Who?’ and the Mike Jones, but I love it.”

Malakoff fan, Shernett Thomas, had a sign that said “Mike Jones” on one side and “(281) 330-8004” on the other side and posed with the star quarterback after the Tigers’ championship win.

And the good news for Malakoff fans and Texas high school football fans, Jones is only a junior, which is bad news for Class 3A Division I foes.
