Lady Lions returning to the playoffs

LONGVIEW — The Tyler High Lady Lions are back in the soccer playoffs.

The Lady Lions (16-7-3) will take on the Lufkin Lady Panthers (8-9-1) in a Class 5A bi-district game that is scheduled for 6 p.m. Tuesday at Longview High School’s soccer field.



The winner of the Tyler-Lufkin contest advances to meet the winner between Lucas Lovejoy (18-1-4) and Terrell (6-11-2), which are scheduled to play at 6 p.m. Tuesday in Terrell.

Tyler finished third in District 15-5A with a record of 8-5-1, while Lufkin was runner-up in District 16-5A with a mark of 7-3.

Other 15-5A bi-district games include district champion Longview vs. Nacogdoches, runner-up Mount Pleasant vs. Huntsville and fourth-place Whitehouse vs. Kingwood Park.

The Lady Lions are in the postseason for the first time since 2014, which was the third of three consecutive playoff appearances.

Coach Juan Lara has relied on his seven seniors for a remarkable turnaround for the Tyler program. The Lady Lions won one district game in 2022 and four in 2022.

Seniors include: goalkeeper Alexy Viramontes, left wing Angelica Martinez, centerback/striker Victoria Arteaga, midfielder/right wing Annie Pineda, midfielder Yamilet Ruiz, left back Jennifer Rodriguez and midfielder Karla Maldonado.

Juniors include: right wing Nathalie Albarran-Hernandez, goalkeeper Brianna Rodriguez-Dominguez, left wing Leslie Garcia, left back Leda Paz, midfielder Jennifer Hernandez, centerback Yaretzi Zavala-Velez and centerback Daniela Gaona.

Other members of team include sophomores Nicolle Espinal (striker) and Valeria Maldonado (centerback); and freshman Lorilei Fernandez (striker).
