Edgewood wins battle of Bulldogs with Quitman

QUITMAN — Edgewood rolled to a 48-14 win over Quitman as quarterback Trevor Golightly passed for three touchdowns and rushed for another at Bud Moody Stadium on Friday night.

Edgewood (4-2 overall, 2-0 District 9-3A Division II) received the opening kickoff and quickly moved down the field as Golightly completed three passes for 29 yards, including a 5-yard scoring pass to Jathen Johnson in the corner of the end zone to make the score 7-0 early in the first quarter.



Quitman had a promising opening drive that saw them move across midfield but Edgewood forced a fumble and recovered it at the 47 yard-line. Edgewood took advantage of the miscue and cashed it in for a score five plays later when Bryan Paniagua bounced off several tacklers for a 27-yard touchdown run to make the score, 14-0.

Quitman (2-4, 0-2) got things rolling in the second quarter as quarterback Klayton Meadows moved the offense with six carries for 44 yards which ultimately led to a 1-yard scoring plunge by Jacob Breding to trim the deficit, 14-6 with 5:23 left in the first half.

Quitman had a chance to get the ball back when Edgewood faced a third-and-28 from the Quitman 33-yard line, but a pass interference penalty gave Edgewood a first down at the 18-yard line. Edgewood moved inside the 10-yard line when Golightly hit Tony Smith on a 13-yard pass then Golightly scored on a 7-yard keeper up the middle to make the score, 21-6.

Edgewood added a score just before halftime when Golightly tossed a 36-yard touchdown pass to Johnson on a perfectly placed ball in the corner of the end zone to make the score, 28-6.

Edgewood picked up where they left off in the first half as Golightly and company continued to hit on all cylinders. Edgewood pushed the lead, 35-6 when Golightly tossed an absolute dime on a 34-yard scoring strike to Johnson. It was the duo’s third scoring hookup of the contest.

Quitman added another score early in the fourth quarter when Breding found the end zone on a 9-yard dive up the middle of the field.

Edgewood put the game away for good on their next possession when Lucas Pippin delivered an electrifying 67-yard touchdown run to make the score, 42-14. Edgewood punctuated the win with a 39-yard touchdown run by Paniagua midway through the fourth quarter.

The Edgewood defense held Quitman to just 14 points and were led by Dominic Jackson who recorded three interceptions on the night.

Edgewood will face rival Grand Saline at home next week in a huge 9-3A battle between district unbeatens that will have huge playoff and possible district title implications riding on the outcome. Meanwhile, Quitman will travel to Paris Chisum next week to try and get back in the win column and keep their playoff hopes very much alive.
