Dexter Floyd announces candidacy for City of Tyler Council District 2

Dexter Floyd — Tyler educator, community leader and advocate — has announced his candidacy for the Tyler District 2 City Council seat.

Floyd is known for his work as the principal of Tyler ISD’s RISE Academy and his dedicated service as a pastor. He is prepared to utilize his experience, passion, and dedication to serve the city council, according to a campaign announcement. 



Floyd’s decision to run is motivated by his desire to create an inclusive Tyler where all residents can flourish regardless of their background.

“I am running for city council to make a real difference in our community. Tyler needs leadership that understands the unique challenges and strengths of District 2,” Floyd said in a press release. “I am committed to representing the diverse voices of our minority-majority districts and working tirelessly to create a more equitable, safe, and prosperous Tyler for all.”

As a Nationally Recognized Teaching Strategy Expert and an Education Consultant at various colleges and universities, Floyd brings a wealth of knowledge and experience in education and community building not currently represented on the city council.

His work at RISE Academy, a TEA A-rated campus, demonstrates his ability to lead with excellence and compassion, according to his announcement. 

Floyd’s areas of focus include critical issues affecting District 2, including fostering affordable housing, bridging healthcare gaps, facilitating more community policing strategies, and revitalizing our neighborhoods.

Floyd’s campaign will kick off with a series of listening tours and community events, allowing him to engage directly with the residents of District 2.

“I want to hear from you, understand your concerns, and work together to find solutions that will benefit our community,” Floyd said.
